St. Joseph Catholic Church, Umon-Okon: A Mission Fulfilled and a Community Renewed

We are pleased to take you down memory lane and share an update on St. Joseph Catholic Church, Umon-Okon, a mission project organized and shepherded by Fr. Akan Simon that has now been fully operational for few years and continues to serve as a spiritual and communal center for the Umon community.

A Call Born From Faith and Need

In 2011, during a visit to his home village, Fr. Simon was celebrating Mass in the existing St. Joseph Church when a wooden pew collapsed, creating a loud and frightening disruption. Many parishioners initially feared that an attack or something violent had occurred.

After Mass, the president of St. Joseph Church approached Fr. Simon and said words that would shape the course of this mission:

“Our son, our church is falling apart. Since you live in the Church, please help us build our church.”

Those words remained with Fr. Simon. When he returned to Nigeria in late 2013 for a sabbatical, his purpose was threefold: a prolonged retreat, time with his beloved mother, and missionary service. That missionary service took concrete form in the effort to build a new and worthy church for his home faith community.

The existing structure was unsafe and deteriorating. Built primarily of mud-sand walls and termite-prone wood, it could no longer adequately serve a growing congregation.

Building the New Church

Construction of the new St. Joseph Catholic Church began in November 2013. Through generous donor support, approximately $400,000 was raised and invested in the project. The new church was built with concrete walls and steel roof trusses, ensuring long-term safety and stability.

What began as an urgent need became a powerful witness to faith, perseverance, and collaboration. Today, the church is fully functional, structurally sound, and actively serving the community as a place of worship, sacramental life, and gathering.

A Living Testimony of Mission Partnership

St. Joseph Catholic Church now stands as a lasting testament to what is possible when faith, generosity, and local leadership come together. It continues to serve daily pastoral needs and remains a visible sign of hope and dignity for the people of Umon.

We are deeply grateful to all who supported this project through prayer, financial contributions, and encouragement over the years. Your generosity has borne lasting fruit.
