On Sunday, June 28, 2026, the faithful of the Ukana Deanery gathered as a family at their headquarters, Assumption Parish, Ukana Iba, for the annual Cathedraticum. This remarkable day served as a powerful testament to the unity of our local Church and its unwavering commitment to the mission of Christ.
A Spirit of Resilience and Hope
The celebration was particularly unique, as it marked the first time the community had gathered for a Deanery visit since our Chief Shepherd, Most Rev. Camillus R. Umoh, hosted the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria for their historic Second Plenary. The joy of that national event carried over into this local gathering, which began with a solemn Holy Mass celebrated by the Bishop and concelebrated by priests serving throughout the Deanery.
In his homily, Bishop Umoh drew strength from the Prophet Jeremiah, who remained firm in his calling despite threats and opposition. Acknowledging that we currently live in very difficult times, the Bishop exhorted the faithful not to lose hope. Echoing the words of Jesus, he encouraged everyone to cast aside their anxieties, reminding them: “Do not be afraid”.
Solidarity in the Mission
The message of steadfastness was met with a profound display of solidarity and love. The faithful of Ukana Deanery expressed their commitment to the Church through generous gifts and support, ensuring that the work of the Diocese continues to flourish even amidst societal challenges. This mutual support between the shepherd and his flock is a living example of the Church as a vibrant community of faith.
