Walking Together in the Gospel: Bishop Umoh Addresses the 50th Methodist Synod

April 18, 2026, was a remarkable day in the history of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Ikot Ekpene Archdiocese, as they celebrated the 50th Anniversary of their Annual Synod. In a powerful sign of ecumenical unity and togetherness, our Chief Shepherd, Most Rev. Camillus R. Umoh, was invited to participate and present a paper on the vital theme of “How to Grow a Church.”

A Witness of Unity

The event began with Bishop Umoh expressing deep gratitude to the Methodist faithful and particularly to His Grace, Rt. Rev. Etim Ekong, for the invitation to share in this historic milestone. This gathering served as a beautiful testament to the shared mission of the Gospel and the strength found in communal witness within the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene.

Martyria, Diaconia, and Koinonia

In his presentation, Bishop Umoh explored the essential pillars required for a church to truly flourish. He outlined three specific pathways to growth:

  • Martyria (Witness): The Bishop noted that growth often involves suffering for the sake of the Gospel, as true witness is rooted in sacrifice.
  • Diaconia (Service): A growing church must be at the service of everyone, reaching out to both the materially poor and those who are “spiritually poor,” including the wealthy who seek deeper meaning.
  • Koinonia (Community): Authentic growth requires living a vibrant community life, where the faithful support one another in Christ.

Bishop Umoh reminded all gathered that true leadership in the Church is always about leading others to Christ, not to ourselves. He encouraged the faithful to grow the Church not only through preaching and words but by living as examples of faith in their daily lives.

A Mission of Formation and Service

The impactful teachings left the faithful feeling both fulfilled and challenged to deepen their commitment to the Gospel. This event highlights the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene as a true place of prayer, formation, and service, where we work alongside our neighbors to continue the work of Christ.
